March’s Sunday Drive went ahead as scheduled but the
organisers, Sandie Simonis and Chris Keeley, concluded
the Drive itself was not viable for results purposes
with no records re positions being kept.
The Drive began badly from the very start when, like
January’s Drive, someone turned up without booking
through Sandie first. 22 players were allowed to play
but most of them were still in the café area at the
scheduled start time of 1.00 pm!! Tables had not been
set out by the venue staff and needed to be brought in
from the corridor. Then once everybody checked in, and
the first round draw made, it was discovered only NINE
attendees brought the required playing equipment!
This was only the second time in over 25 years of
running Drives there was not enough Scrabble sets
available to go around.
As there were not enough boards, people without a
board played by 'phone on unofficial Scrabble apps
which is not what a Drive is supposed to be about.
Consequently one or two players were unable to
fulfil the required four games.
Going forward we must focus on players booking well
in advance, turning up at the right time, assemble
in Room 2 and *not* in the Café area, bring full sets,
and finally bring their own cups, teabags, sugar and
biscuits for refreshments. Milk will be provided by the
organiser.
